Canadian Pioneers - Armstrongs in Ontario and Manitoba

1/11/2013

The Armstrongs were among the early settlers in Canada.  One branch of the clan came from Cumberland England, and settled in Ontario where they owned a farm and saw-mill.  Their son, William Armstrong, was born in Ontario in 1842.  William and his brother moved west to the Rossburn district of Manitoba in 1879, where they filed for homesteads, and were later joined by others from the Armstrong clan.

In 1920, William's daughter recalled the Armstrong's early days in Rossburn. Her story paints an interesting picture of the early settlers, and is reproduced in issue 77 of The Armstrong News for Association members.

Hi Dwayne,

I'm wondering if you could help me find information for a friend of mine who is quite likely a relation to the Armstrong family of Toronto.

Her mother, Annie May (Armstrong) born 1898, was adopted at the age of 6 by a couple who owned a hotel in Lucknow, Ontario. She is noted on a family website on My Heritage as:
Annie May Winterstein (born Button)
MyHeritage Family TreesClosson Web Site, managed by fclosson
Birth
Oct 8 1898 - Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Death
May 27 1966 - Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada
Husband
Nelson Wesley Winterstein
Daughter
Jean P Winterstein
According to her remaining daughter, Ruth, age 96, Annie was and her siblings were put in an orphanage when her mother died and her father could not take care of them. When Annie was 14 she moved back to Toronto to be with her family. She lived their for about 6 years and then moved back to Lucknow, married Nelson Winterstein and continued her life.
Have you heard this story in your investigations of family history? Do you know of any Armstong male whose wife died when children were young?
Any help you could give would really help my friend, Ruth.
Thank you for your time!
