The Armstrong Y-DNA Project

Three types of genealogical DNA test are now widely available to amateur genealogists, giving information on their genetic ancestry:

  • Y-DNA - this type of test looks at the Y-chromosome, which is passed down from father to son on the direct paternal line. It is the most popular for genealogical research. Women do not have a Y-chromosome so this test is only relevant to men.
  • Autosomal DNA (atDNA) - this type of test looks at the atDNA that is inherited from all your ancestors.
  • Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) - this type of test looks at the mtDNA that a man or woman inherits from their mother's direct maternal line.

Group projects are an opportunity to work with others to explore your genetic heritage. One such project is the Armstrong Y-DNA Project, hosted on FamilyTreeDNA.com.

Many members of the Armstrong Clan Association have joined this project which now has results from over 200 members.  When your DNA matches with someone in the project, you'll have the option to contact them and exchange information about your family histories. This may help in your genealogy research.  The project's administrator is also a regular contributor to the Armstrong News.

Armstrong Y-DNA Project Update - Geno 2 Next Gen Transfers

Have you already been tested using the National Geographic Project's Geno 2 Next Gen test kit?

Do you now want to join the Armstrong Y-DNA Project at Family Tree DNA?

Is so, here's some good news.  People who have tested with National Geographic can now have their tests results added to Family Tree DNA.

The Armstrong FTDNA Project Administrators received the following update from Family Tree DNA.

"The National Geographic Genographic Project’s Geno 2 Next Gen results have been arriving for some time, and now the transfer feature is functional.

Testers may transfer their results to FTDNA for free and, as with Geno 2.0, will see the Y-DNA SNPs and haplogroup as well as the mtDNA haplogroup.

Once transferred, the tester may upgrade their results to include Family Finder for just $39.

Y and mtDNA raw data can be downloaded with the free transfer; to download, the autosomal portion requires the upgrade to Family Finder.

Please note that the transfer option is only available for completed tests. Attempts to transfer a test before results are complete will trigger a message saying to try again later. "

The ScotlandsDNA Research Project

The Association has received a press release from ScotlandsDNA.com, "Calling all Armstrongs" to participate in their Y-DNA research project.

Dr Jim Wilson is doing important research with ScotlandsDNA.  Some of his findings have been reported in the Armstrong News and elsewhere on this website (click here and here for more information), so you may wish to support this research.

Please be aware that, at this time, the results of ScotlandsDNA's tests concern deep ancestry only, and are unlikely to provide information on your recent ancestors or "bridge the gap" with your own genealogy research.
